In 2010 Randy Guijarro discovered one of the most sought after photographs for $2 at a junk shop in Fresno, Calif. The image turned out to be an authentic Billy the Kid photo with members of the Regulators playing croquet.
Guijarro’s find has was authenticated by Kagin’s Inc, a Western Americana and rare coin expert. Kagin’s spent a year authenticating it by researching and finding the exact location where the photograph was taken. The found it in Chaves, New Mexico, where wooden beams from the building from the photo were found.
The search to authenticate the image will be a two-hour long documentary airing on the National Geographic Channel October 18th. This would be the second known photograph ever taken and authenticated to be Billy the Kid. The first photo of Billy sold for $2.3 million in 2011.
The 4×5 photograph is worth millions and has been insured for $5 million. Guijarro was lucky enough to stumble upon one of the coolest photographic finds in the past few years (besides Vivian Maier).
