So what happens when you’re successful, you’ve become a world-renowned photographer and teacher; what do you do to make your work more meaningful? David Middleton, a renowned landscape photographer has all these successes, and now helps out non-profits and organizations that look to help people.
David found that he needed more from his photography and professional career, so he started providing free photography for non-profits to help benefit programs who desperately needed imagery for their websites, etc. to use his photography for the greater good.
He gives an excellent lecture on working for free here on the B & H photographer lecture series:
Sometimes we get wrapped up in the tech of photography, the gizmos, the techniques, the endless post-processing techniques, and just trying to get our name out there. While there is certainly nothing wrong with this, I also find myself wanting to make things better in the world.
So as a photographer, if you have that inclination to give back or just want to get your images out there into the world, why not go to a small non-profit and see what they need visually. I’ve found nothing to be more rewarding than when I can help somebody in some capacity, so I’ll be looking into helping non-profits, that is, if they like my stinky images ;).
David also speaks specifically about a solar light called the Luci that is given to people in rural parts of the world who don’t have any lighting options at night. The Luci allows them to take on second jobs, prepare food for their family, and makes life a little better for those much less fortunate than us. Check out more about the Give Luci Program here.
