Canon ME20F-SH Captures the Beauty of The Northern Lights
When I first read the specs of the multi-purpose Canon ME20F-SH camera, a full-HD Full-Frame CMOS sensor with a light sensitivity of over 4,000,000 ISO, I wondered who the camera was for.
With a suggested price tag of $30,000, the ME20F-SH is targeted at surveillance and low-light image and video capture and applications, and recently AURORA Skycam, a German film company took it to Norway to capture the elusive Aurora Borealis.
The video below shows what’s possible in pitch-black settings.
The results show a powerful light sensitivity sensor capable of capturing amazing video in low-light conditions like the Northern Lights. It seems as though Canon may be poised to give Sony a run for their money in the high-ISO video and still game.
Here are some of the key features of the ME20F-SH:
- Ultra low-light performance at ISO 4,000,000
- High quality Full HD 1080p/1080i/720p output
- Flexible control with auto and custom settings
- Compatible with a wide range of EF lenses
- Remote control of camera settings and built-in ND and IR cut filters possible

I find the idea inspirational. To capture the aurora borealis with such a high ISO setting means that motion blur as the aurora moves no longer gives hazy images. Imagine if this sensor was sent to space to photograph distant galaxies or planets within the solar system.

That would be amazing. Imagine if New Horizons or even Voyager 1 or Voyager 2 were equipped with a camera like this.
